There are a total of 3 different type of Gear Slots:
Grunt
Tactician
Power.
Gears can only fit into their respective Gear Slots.
Tactician and Power gears only provide bonuses in encounters. Where as Grunt gears only provide bonuses in missions.
Different troopers have different slots available. They are varied according to the different types and rarities of the Troopers.
